Dialogue

For the first time in history in recent years, single women outnumbered married women in America.

Among young adults, their numbers have exploded. Forty-six percent of women under 34 are not married.

The stigma of the “spinster” simply sounds antique. For many, being single means a sense of  liberation.

The rise of the single woman is echoed in China.

Historically, women in China who were unmarried by the age of 30 faced the stigma of being labeled a spinster. But in recent years, many women are pushing back.

In a beauty ad that went viral earlier this year, Chinese women described the enormous pressure they face to get married — and all the reasons they’re refusing.

Today’s women are, for the most part, not abstaining from or delaying marriage to prove a point about feminism and equality.

They are doing it because they are able to live full professional, economic, social, sexual, and parental lives on their own if they don’t happen to meet a person to whom they want to legally bind themselves.

They are increasingly reluctant to settle because of external pressure and expectations.

But of course, not all women feel liberated and many, particularly those in rural areas, still conform to the traditional ways of thinking.

Yet, the rising power of the single woman represents a significant power shift in gender relations.

It will also have a lasting impact on our social and economic lives for generations to come.

Grammar

Happen to

If you look in the dictionary, happen will usually be defined as “taking place”, or “occuring”. There is another connotation to this word, however, which is “by chance”. So usually when English speakers say “happen to be”, they are usually emphasizing the chance or the randomness of something. The following sentences will show you how to use this pattern:

1.If you happen to see John at the party tonight, could you get his phone number for me?

2.Today I met a guy who just happened to go to school with my Mom. Small world, right?

3.As luck would have it, after I ran out of gas on the side of the road, my aunt just happened to be going to work.

4.I met my wife in university. We happened to have the same economics class.

5.________________________________________________________________________.

DISCUSSION

Make a conversation with your teacher.

1.What do you think is the reason why there are many single women today?
