Dialogue

Read the dialogue aloud with your teacher.

Hey Ricardo, planning on watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV this year?
 嗨,Richardo,你打算在電視上看今年的梅西感恩節大遊行嗎?

Well, given the pandemic, that’s the only way to watch it, Lucy. I just hope this won’t be the new normal.
因為疫情,也只能在電視上看了,Lucy。 我只希望別以後都這樣了。

Same. I heard balloons will still be flown, but there won’t be any human handlers.
我也是。 我聽說還是會有大氣球的,但不會有人來操縱了。

This year’s Macy’s parade will be the first of its kind, since having begun way back in 1924.
從1924年開始舉辦以來,今年的梅西大遊行是第一次以這種形式進行的。

Back then, it was only intended to be a one-time event for the grand opening of the world’s largest department store.
當時,梅西大遊行只是為了慶祝世界最大百貨公司盛大開業而舉辦的一次性活動。

Yeah, but it was such a hit that it evolved into an annual event still nationally broadcasted today.
是啊,但當時辦得實在是太成功了,所以就演變成了一年一度的慶典活動,直到今天還在全國範圍播放。

Who’d have thought that nearly a century later, millions of Americans would tune in every Thanksgiving morning to usher in the holiday season?
誰能想到將近一個世紀後的今天,每年感恩節早上幾百萬美國人會看大遊行來迎接節日的到來?

Talk about a stroke of marketing genius!
這就是行銷上的天才之舉啊!

Yeah, marching bands, Broadway shows, and big-name singers performing on top of gorgeous floats.
是啊,遊行樂隊、百老匯歌舞、大牌歌手都會在漂亮的遊行彩車上表演。

Now you’ve got me all nostalgic thinking about past parades.
你這麼說讓我更懷念以前的遊行了。

It really does evoke happiness, togetherness and thankfulness among us Americans.
梅西遊行確實喚起了我們美國人心中的幸福、團結和感恩的情感。

Grammar

Who’d have thought …?

The phrase “who would have thought” is used to express surprise about information or the result of a situation. It essentially means that in the past, no one would have thought or imagined that this would happen.

For example, in today’s lesson, the speaker said, “Who’d have thought that nearly a century later, millions of Americans would tune in every Thanksgiving morning to usher in the holiday season?” Here, the speaker is expressing his surprise that the event continues to be such a big deal today.

1. Who’d have thought that this is how 2021 would turn out?

2. Who’d have thought that JK Rowling would eventually become richer than the Queen?

3. He was so shy and taciturn when he was a kid. Who’d have thought that he’d turn out to be such a great public speaker?

DISCUSSION

Make a conversation with your teacher.

1.What are your favorite thanksgiving foods? Why are they your favorite?
